Chuffy in Something Directory

Chuffy was started in May 1980, then aged 18, not with a view to making a quick fortune but to bring my retirement date forward. The name Chuffy has no importance other than I have always had a habit of naming things for no reason. I earned then £60 per week and had normal bills to pay with little left to save. I set a target of £250 to begin my investment portfolio, this took several months in which time I studied all the available sources for information on investing in equities. I set up a dummy portfolio during this time to test my ability at stock picking, which was pretty appalling. The UK Stock market then was a lot less friendly to small investors than today. Also with only £250 to invest brokers were hardly falling over themselves to help. The commission and expenses took a fair proportion but I remained undeterred. I kept saving up until I reached a total of £4,000 invested. An edited history of my share dealings you will find on the transactions page. When the share portfolio, named Acorn, began to gather momentum I decided to re-direct my savings and start another portfolio, named Spartan, which would be invested in unit and investment trusts, Tessas and with-profits endowment policies. The thinking being that I could moderate the peaks and troughs in Chuffys overall performance. I began investing in Pensions once Acorn and Spartan were established well enough for me to transfer capital from Acorn into the Pension funds. This enabled Chuffy to shelter capital from Tax and provide me with a pension which was my end game objective. Finally, I transferred capital into a portfolio of property and with- profits bonds, named Fixed, which will provide a long term home for excess capital.
