The Southern California American Marketing Association became a chapter of the national American Marketing Association in 1938. Initially, the chapter encompassed all of Southern California, but eventually the “Inland Empire” seceded from the Southern CA chapter and formed its own chapter, as did both San Diego and Orange counties. The Southern California chapter incorporated February 3, 1977 as a non-profit entity operated by volunteers with the purpose of the organization stated as follows in the Articles of Incorporation:
