While spending a year abroad in Germany, I was assigned to a dorm room across the hall from a charming German student. Fast forward several years and we were married with a young son living in suburban New Jersey. Of course we would raise our child bilingually! Being avid readers, German books were a must. However, I found it very difficult to shop for my baby. U.S. bookstores didnt have any idea of the kinds of German books I wanted. Our Oma sent wonderful packages but they took so long to arrive. So with the support of my wonderful husband and a lot of hopes and dreams, I opened Alphabet Garten in the spring of 2002 offering a variety of German storybooks, childrens music, classic childrens literature and educational materials via a website to help bilingual families like ours. And what a wonderful journey it has been! We take great pride in providing an outstanding selection of German books and multimedia for children. All but a few of our titles are imported from Europe and are popular right now with kids in Germany (and other German-speaking countries). We offer a wide selection including titles useful for beginners through native speakers, music, computer software, and German DVDs. When arriving in Munich for my Junior Year abroad, I never imagined that I would marry my handsome German neighbor. So you can see that the assignment to 1510 Christoph-Probst-Strasse was the critical detail that started this chapter of my life. Coincidence? Auf keinen Fall! I prefer to think of it as Schicksal (destiny).
