The very first book Timber Press published in 1980 is still in print. J. D. Vertrees Japanese Maples, rejected by a dozen other publishers, was by no means a sure bet at the time. It eventually created its own market by filling a need for horticultural information on those beautiful plants. Founder Richard Abel followed this successful lead with a line of quality books for sophisticated gardeners, horticulturists, botanists, naturalists, and landscape professionals. Robert Conklin, who bought the company in 1989, comments that the longevity of our books — an unusual phenomenon in the world of book publishing reflects our basic publishing philosophy: that we publish books written by genuine experts, and lavish upon them the most thoughtful and meticulous editorial attention, to assure their authoritative quality and enduring value. Today Timber Press, located in Portland, Oregon, has over four hundred titles in print and is considered the preeminent publisher of horticulture books. The publics love affair with gardening, making it the number one leisure activity in the U.S., means that the number of educated gardeners has blossomed. They want in-depth, expert information, and they thirst for the next new trend. The company resides in Portlands Old Town in a historic structure, originally a shipping warehouse built in 1893. Exposed old-growth Douglas fir beams and brick walls decorate the offices. Many authors are also plant explorers who travel throughout Asian and South African landscapes, and as a result the Timber catalog reflects the planets rich plant life. Landscape design books have become an increasingly vital part of Timbers lineup, and books covering food-related topics will join the fruit-growing titles. A popular new series released in 2004 is the Timber Press Pocket Guides. These compact references by Timbers leading authors are moderately priced and are ideal to take along when shopping for plants.
