China Books & Periodicals, Inc. is Americas largest and oldest distributor of books, periodicals and other cultural products from China. China Books & Periodicals was founded by Henry Noyes, a novelist and poet (Hand Over Fist, China Born) who was born to American missionary parents stationed in Guangzhou (Canton) in 1910. The early years were extremely trying for the family-run business. Henry personally carted books and magazines around the country in a station wagon looking for bookstores and newsstands that would sell them. China Books first success story came with booming sales of a title previously unavailable in the United States. The Little Red Book, or Quotations from Chairman Mao, became the first runaway bestseller. To this day, that book has remained a very important political document and is used as a textbook in political science classes throughout the world. Henry Noyes with Huang Hua (former Chinese Foreign Minister) and Israel Epstein (Chief Editor Emeritus of China Today magazine). In the early seventies, Henrys son, Chris, became the first U.S. businessman to be invited to the Guangzhou Trade Fair. The film that he shot to record that historical visit was later broadcast on NBC News nationwide.
