Georgann and Mike Wachter have been diving around the world since the early 1970’s. They discovered diving while snorkeling in the Mediterranean Sea in 1972. Since that time, they have visited many sites in the Caribbean, Atlantic, Pacific, and Great Lakes. Nowhere else in the world have they discovered the pristine and perfectly preserved shipwrecks that lie in the fresh waters of the Great Lakes. Living near Lake Erie, and a fascination with Great Lakes shipwrecks drove the extensive research effort that is exhibited in Erie Wrecks East and Erie Wrecks West. Early on, guests diving aboard the Wachter’s boat would ask about the details of a shipwreck while en route to the site. In order to answer these questions, Mike and Georgann began keeping a notebook on board that contained photos and information on many of the shipwrecks they were diving.
