Created in July 1995, Intakto is the result of a fortuitous encounter between a southern guitar and a northern violin.  Chilean singer-guitarist-composer Alejandro Venegas shared his intimate knowledge of Latin American music (traditional and modern) with Simon Claude, the classically-trained Quebec violinist, who brought to the group his experience as a composer and rock musician. Immediately a certain chemistry existed between the two, yet it was through hard work and exchanges that they found their very own identity.  From this sparkling cultural encounter and the benefits of various fertile tensions emerged a group under its own influence, whose superb musicality is rendered through a: tension between the northern intensity of Simon Claude and the Latino outburst   in a calm cloak that is Alejandro, tension between the tradition’s strictness and the arrangement’s freedom, tension between the seriousness of the music and the group’s spontaneous and light-hearted stage presence. Although Intakto was originally inspired by the tango repertoire of Piazzolla, Morales and Bonet, the evolution of the group has brought it to a very personal style of performing beyond its unique approach to Latin music. Today, Intakto’s compositions, as inscribed on their award-winning CD released in October 2002 on the Justin Time label, are imbued with the touching words of contemporary poet Manuel Aranguiz sung in Spanish by Alejandro in his warm, suave voice, and supported by Simon Claude’s incisive yet sparkling violin interventions as well as an assembly of performers that varies from four to seven musicians depending on the occasion. With over 300 performances in Montreal, their home base, throughout the province of Quebec, across Canada, USA, Japan and France, Intakto when on stage leaves no one indifferent. And more important still, the group appeals not only to Latin music lovers, but also to a diversified audience, from the trendy teens to the nostalgic elderly.  But whoever is in the audience is both amazed and moved by Intakto’s performances, always filled with emotion and their trademark humour.
